The breakfast

Our United Excel Social Justice Ministry runs the breakfast. Each year it honors community leaders who work for justice and awards scholarships to students who are in college or on their way. Some years it has been a breakfast and some years a brunch. The 2025 theme was “The Communing of Justice: We Fight On.”

The 2027 celebration

The 2027 celebration is called A Legacy of Opportunity. At 10:20 AM we present four scholarships on stage, two of $1,000 and two $500 book scholarships, to students pursuing higher education at BRCC and other colleges. Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr. gives the keynote address at 11:40 AM. He is a professor at Princeton University and, like Dr. King, a graduate of Morehouse College.

United Christian Faith Ministries

UCFM began in August 2001 with seven members, and our first worship service was held at the Ramada Inn in Baton Rouge. Dr. Mark A. Ellis, Sr., our founder and Senior Pastor, has led the church from those seven to more than 2,000 members and over 40 active ministries.

Our mission is to bring people of all races to Jesus and into his family, develop their faith into Christ-like maturity, equip them for their ministry in the church and their lifelong mission in the world. Our church line, “Bring. Develop. Equip.” comes from that sentence. We worship at 9229 North Ridgewood Drive on Sundays at 8:00 AM and 11:15 AM. Come as you are.

The United Excel Social Justice Ministry

The United Excel Social Justice Ministry is part of our outreach department, and Dr. Kristie Perry directs it. It serves Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas, and it defines social justice as the equitable distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges.

Its work includes town hall meetings, film festivals, voter registration and classes on the history of social justice in the United States. In 2024 it joined the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice and the National Pan-Hellenic Councils of Greater Baton Rouge, LSU and Southern University for a forum at our church with the candidates for mayor and the 6th Congressional District.

It also started a campaign that raises awareness of the harm gambling does to families. And its scholarship committee reviews every complete application for this year’s four scholarships.

This year, we’re glad to partner with Baton Rouge Community College.

This is our first year with BRCC, and the college is our host. BRCC brings its commitment to educational access, workforce development and economic opportunity. It is also one of the college campuses where our church does ministry, along with Southern University and LSU.
